Statement On Killing of George Floyd

As we view our nation and our world these days, we see that so many are hurting and angry. My heart grieves with the Floyd family as they deal with this tragic and wrongful act. George Floyd was a person created in the image of God and of tremendous value. The killing of George Floyd follows a general trend of the devaluing of human life. Unless all human lives are valued, then no human lives will be valued. The devaluing of lives in the Black community devalues all human life and is wrong. We must pray for our law enforcement officers and our nation that we will be able to achieve the critical standard of justice for all. We must all look inside ourselves to see how we contribute to the problem and choose to become a part of the change that must occur. Ultimately, real, and lasting change will only come as hearts are changed. The only one who can change hearts is our Lord Jesus Christ. Healing can happen if we repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us in Christlikeness. Jesus taught us to love our neighbor as our self (Luke 10:25-37) and to love our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). In these two radical truths, we find the way forward. Only God’s love can conquer selfishness and hatred. Jesus came to make a way and to show us the way. Jesus is the light of the world and we are called to shine His light.

Grace and peace in the Lord,    Pastor Chris Yocom

Dear Valley Nazarene Congregation,

This Sunday will have the same guidelines as last Sunday. We will have Sunday School at 9 a.m.

  • We may have 30% of seating capacity maintaining six feet between individuals or families.
  • We will have signs at the entrances, and we will ask anyone who has COVID-like symptoms and other risk factors not to enter.
  • We invite those with COVID-like symptoms and high-risk or vulnerable persons to please stay at home and take advantage of our on-line service at valleynaz.com. For those without symptoms and risk factors but who are more vulnerable, we will have an area where the service will be live streamed apart from the larger crowd.
  • We direct all those who plan to attend to maintain social distance, please be considerate of the health of others. (no handshaking, hugging, etc.)
  • We ask everyone to follow good hygiene practices. (Wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, cover a cough or sneeze, etc.)
  • We encourage everyone to wear a face covering. However due to the controversial nature of the subject of face coverings, we admonish everyone to let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. There is a good chance that some will not wear face coverings because it is not mandatory and there are times when those on stage will not be wearing face coverings. If you choose not to wear a face covering, we ask that you take extra precautions. Activities like singing, laughing, or talking loudly can spread virus more quickly without a face covering.
  • We plan to have everyone enter through the front entrance across from bowling alley. There will be a brief screening process and then someone will direct seating to maintain proper distance in sanctuary. Restrooms will be available for one person at a time.
  • The service will begin at 10:15 a.m. and Sunday School will begin at 9 a.m. There will be no children’s church or nursery this Sunday. However, the nursery area will be available on a limited basis.

We will do everything we can to try to mitigate risk such as cleaning, having sanitizer available, allowing good ventilation of the sanctuary and enacting the above measures. However, there is a risk in attending in-person gatherings of any kind. We cannot guarantee anyone’s safety, therefore those who choose to attend in-person worship services need to understand and be willing to accept that risk. If you invite someone, please share this information with them. Please be in prayer about the re-starting of in-person worship services. Much wisdom and discernment are needed. My prayer is that this service will be a blessing and will glorify the Lord. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this challenging time.  If you have questions or concerns, please call the church office at (719)852-5858.
